Join us for Calligraphic Dialogues, a conversation between artists and master calligraphers Bahman Panahi and Hekiun Oda.
Inspired by the ongoing exhibition Becoming Words, the conversation explores how both artists reimagine traditional calligraphy as an embodied and performative practice, one in which words are not only written or read, but activated through gesture, movement, rhythm, and presence.
Working from Persian and Japanese calligraphic traditions, Panahi and Oda each rethink inherited practices through contemporary forms. Panahi’s work brings together calligraphy, music, rhythm, and gesture, while Oda’s practice draws on the discipline of shodō and the expressive possibilities of movement, scale, and live performance.
Together, they will reflect on how performance transforms calligraphy from a finished object on the page into an event in time—opening new possibilities for how writing can be made, witnessed, and understood.
